Organic Chemistry Solutions: #7

7.* (1995 1 1) Write structural formulas for an example of each of the following:

A. The smallest ketone with 2 sites of unsaturation:

B. A b-lactone

C. An anti-aromatic hydrocarbon

This must be a ring with alternating double bonds and a multiple of 4 ¼ electrons.

D. The molecule called formamide

G. The simplest, naturally occurring , chiral amino acid.

 S-alanine

Notice that this amino acid doesn’t have any improper rotation axes (notably a mirror plane or an inversion center), which is the group theoretical criterion for chirality. Chirality for organic molecules is addressed more fully in the next section.
